Περιορισμένος και ανεπτυγμένος κώδικας, προφορικός και γραπτός λόγος, και η θεωρία της γλωσσικής υστέρησης
In this article the principal stages in the development of Basil Bernstein’s sociolinguistic theory of codes are presented. Furthermore, the main misunderstandings related to the theory are contrasted with what the theory is really about, and an attempt is made to trace their causes. Finally, the codes are explicitly related to a theory of literacy in order to explain their emergence and maintenance in modern industrialized societies.

In this article, it is claimed that from a sociolinguistic point of view the stylistic analysis of a text, especially if it is to be translated, aims at pinpointing the socially recognizable relations of symbolism which develop between various linguistic forms of the text and dimensions of the communicative context of situation in relation to which the text is realized. A linguistic form is semantically charged between the poles of situational dependence and independence. Denotational is that part of its meaning which tends towards situational independence, whereas the connotational part tends towards situational dependence. Within connotational, i.e. situationally dependent, meaning, if the flow of signification is directed from the extralinguistic situation to linguistic production, linguistic forms are socially charged. If, on the other hand, the flow is in the opposite direction, i.e. if our choice of language seeks to (re)define the situation, linguistic choices are stylistically charged. For each form felt to be situationally dependent, the stylist tries to identify (a) its structural identity, i.e. its formal setup and the linguistic level of analysis in which it is embedded, as well as (b) the textual and (c) extratextual functions which it may perform, i.e. the role it plays in, respectively, holding together the parts of the text and embedding the text in the communicative situation .
